How did Motown discover some of their amazing artists

Berry Gordy was not only exceptional in his insightful leadership that brought great music to the world, but also in his way of approaching and discovering his artists. From a broad range of talented and remarkable musicians, who remained, for the most part unnoticed and ignored, living in poor areas and having no means of promoting themselves, Gordy and his Motown associates discovered little treasures hidden in the black hoods of Detroit.

With the exception of Stevie Wonder, who was discovered by Ronnie White of The Miracles while performing outside a street corner for his friends and The Jackson Five, who caught Gladys Knight’s attention and were brought to Motown by Bobby Taylor of The Vancouvers and Motown’s executive Suzanne de Passe, most of the Motown’s hit-makers were discovered in the high schools. Indeed, the high schools were a primary part of Motown’s supply system because this is where all those young artists met. This is where they practiced their music, sang their songs and performed their dances. This is where their social lives were built around. Unlike what people normally think that black music came out of gospels and spirituals, although in a large part it did, Motown’s young artists did not meet in churches. Besides, they didn’t all belong to the same choirs.

Furthermore, Motown could not have produced its remarkable sound without a comprehensive public school music education program. Detroit’s black high schools had well-designed music programs that balanced theory and practice and were taught by prominent teachers. In effect, all Motown artists have taken music courses at school and had been both influenced and motivated by their teachers to pursue a career in music.

The fact that schools played such a key role in Motown’s birth and success was also an important social aspect because it demonstrated the prosperity of a part of black communities that had been affluent enough to send and keep their children in school. Nearly all Motown artists had graduated from high school. When Diana Ross & The Supremes first auditioned with Motown, Gordy thought they were too young and encouraged them to sign a contract upon graduating from high school. The fact that Gordy didn’t want his artists to quit school is a significant sociological remark that should be given credence.

In addition to the schools, artists learned to perform at small black businesses, such as record shops, nightclubs and charm schools. In reality, there was a whole system supporting Motown’s success, a system that was not visible, but was contributing immensely through a well-established infrastructure in the black community during the 1950s. In a way, black urban life in northern cities like Detroit had arrived at a certain point of integration to be able to support Motown. When Motown was founded, black kids in Detroit were interested in music and had a background to understand music and be involved with it.

Gordy had always a team of skilful people around him, who could be of great assistance in his endeavours to discover his amazing artists. An important member of Tamla Records was Raynoma Liles, the founder of The Rayber Voices and a back vocal singer on many of Motown’s early hits. Raynoma discovered the property at 2648 West Grand Boulevard hat became Motown’s famous Hitsville U.S.A. studio. Gordy and Raynoma Liles would marry in 1960 and later divorce, but she remained a significant member of the Motown team.

Another important Motown member was Mickey Stevenson, the label’s A&R director. Being responsible for discovering new, talented artists that would match Motown’s repertoire, Stevenson discovered Martha Reeves & The Vandellas. Besides, by being a prominent songwriter and producer, he also contributed in ‘Dancing In The Street’, (1964) by Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and in ‘Pride And Joy’ (1963) by Marvin Gaye.

Gordy had also the valuable help of Barney Ales, who, unlike the majority of Motown’s team, was not an African-American. Ales was a knowledgeable and antagonistic individual, responsible for putting together a team that would place Motown’s records with distributors, get airplay and coordinate marketing and advertising. When Motown became of the most successful record labels, Ales became one of the highest paid Motown members.

After all these years that Motown has shaped the music industry, there is little doubt that it was a record label that made music by young artists and marketed it to young people. Before Motown’s birth, most of the black artists who recorded R&B music such as Sam Cooke, The Dominoes, The Platters, Little Richard and many others, were older. But with the emergence of Motown, young black people felt that they had their music, their label, and their artists. Besides, all Motown singers were very young. Stevie Wonder signed to Motown at the age of eleven. The Temptations, The Supremes and Smokey Robinson had just finished high school when they began recording for Motown. Motown was the ‘Sound of young America.’

Vancouver Island British Columbia Rainforest Tours: Discover the Rainforest Beyond the Trees With a Biologist

Vancouver Island British Columbia Rainforest Tours

When you take a rainforest tour on Vancouver Island, it’s hard to take your eyes off the giant mossy trees glowing like stained glass in nature’s cathedral. Some of the tallest stretch over 90 meters, while others measure as much as 20 meters in circumference. At more than 1000 years old, the oldest are impressive to be sure. But don’t get a kink in your neck by focussing only on the trees. You might miss the amazing diversity of plants and animals the old growth pacific temperate rainforest has to offer.

Even with your eyes closed there is a humid, fragrant coolness that enables the mosses and lichens clinging to the tree branches to grow so well. Multiple canopy layers, forest openings with berries and other pioneer species, dead standing trees with holes for owls, bats, squirrels, and nut hatches are just a few of the highlights.

For wildflowers, April and May are great times to see what’s flourishing in the ancient rainforest. Coral root and Calypso orchids, trilliums, wild cherry, elderberry and salmon berry are some of the flowers that you can find in the spring. Starting in June and lasting into September, you also can taste the wonderful parade of berries that result from this profusion of flowers. (Be sure to take along a field guide or an expert to avoid any poisonous plants.) There are some very tasty and nutritious plants like stinging nettle (cooked) and many medicinal ones as well.

If you slow down and look down…way down under the slabs of bark in the summer you will see a menagerie of colourful critters. The black and yellow millipede gives off a cherry smell when handled. While the faint whiff of cyanide is harmless to humans, it would prove deadly to others its size that chose to mess with it. Then there are the giant hermaphroditic banana slugs, which get to be 25cm long. Their slime has a natural anaesthetic if you happen to get a toothache while lost in the forest. The delicate and secretive red backed salamanders live their entire lives in rotten logs. In fact there are over 92 species of animals, insects, and birds using dead trees in the forest.

In April the forests fill with spring bird song, especially in the early morning and you can watch many species that prefer older forests such as varied thrushes, brown creepers and pileated woodpeckers. If you’re lucky and around at dawn or dusk you may hear or see a western screech owl, northern saw-whet owl or northern-pygmy owl. Bird watching in rain forests with trees that stretch higher than 20 stories presents its challenges. It is helpful to have a scope with an angled eyepiece or lie on your back with binoculars to save your neck. Many species can also be called down to more visible levels with their own call or a ‘psss’ sound. There are some excellent recordings of bird calls of Vancouver Island by John Neville which greatly assist in identifying these phantoms that flit about high in the tree canopy.

The mild climate on Vancouver Island means that you can experience the rainforest wonders all year. The wet season begins gradually sparking a techni-colour explosion of mushrooms in September and October. November brings the torrential rains that produce such fantastic growth and bring out the many shades of vibrant green in the mosses reconstituting from a dry summer. Mist, fog and rain bring a whole new atmosphere and photographic opportunities.

Discover Vancouver Island: The Pacific Island Escape With Everything!

There aren’t many pacific islands where you can surf in the morning and ski in the afternoon, especially ones that are ranked number one by more than one famous travel magazine, many years running!

But there is one!

An island with a history stretching back as far as the ice age, that perches on the western edge of a great continent and one that is growing very quickly as a “must see” destination.

Only about three hundred and fifty miles in length , Vancouver Island sits in the Straits of Georgia, north-west of Seattle and an hour and forty minutes by ferry from the mainland of British Columbia, on the west coast of Canada. Vancouver Island is home to the capital city of British Columbia, Victoria, and has been since 1850 at which time the interior gold rush brought prospectors and a supporting cast of many people to this pristine island.

Today, the temperate climate, stunning scenery and world class amenities make this island a travelers mecca, and for good reason: or to be precise, many good reasons. English speaking, well actually “Canadian” speaking, easy to drive and everything within fairly short distances helps make any vacation here very enjoyable and relatively stress free, especially as accommodations and food services are widespread, well located and of the highest standard: many rated the best on the continent and some, the best in the world.

But it’s the diversity that is the main attraction. Whale watching, body surfing, long cycling trails, wilderness camping, world class spa-resorts, museums, historical sites, famous gardens, ski-ing, sailing, salmon fishing, diving, real wild-life, or spa treatment with a Pacific ocean view. Home grown produce markets, fresh seafoods, local wineries, breweries and cideries, wilderness camping, bed and breakfast or famous five star hotels,

Vancouver Island supports it all and it’s there to be discovered. Jazz festivals, art festivals, opera, book fairs, antique fairs, garden tours, agricultural fairs, theaters and ghost walks. Marathons, cycling races, golf, lacrosse, soccer and ice hockey: and even the tall ships make an appearance!

Vancouver island is a celebration of agricultural, maritime and historical; of First Nations peoples and others from many nations. Of British and Spanish and Asian influences against a backdrop of stunning mountain scenery: a wilderness with all the amenities. Quality shopping, extensive tourist services, modern transportation and yet, the unusual. Float plane services, eagles on the lamp posts, art galleries on the walls, eight hundred year old trees, sea kayaking and afternoon tea with triangular sandwiches.

But more to the point, what shall we have for lunch!

How about some local oysters to start with, followed by a home grown emu burger on a home baked bun with garden grown tomatoes and locally grown herbs picked fresh for the table. Perhaps some locally made goat cheese and a pint of ale brewed on the premises. Actually I think I will have a small glass of the locally made blueberry port wine with my home grown strawberries, although the flambe’ pears look rather nice!

Hey, take some time to Discover Vancouver Island for yourself, you will be glad you did.

Discover Vancouver Island: If You Think Your Really Up To It!

One thing Vancouver Island is famous for is the “great outdoors”, and if you are one of those travelers who loves the adventure of walking, climbing, pot-holing, mountain biking and generally carrying large weights on your back, then have I got a challenge for you!

Besides the outstanding, pristine scenery, the wildlife, both marine and land locked and the opportunity to experience the outdoors safely, Vancouver Island has some of the most challenging hiking trails in the world.

But let’s work up to it slowly: I have seen first hand what it can do to the so-called amateur outdoors man.

On the south end of the island, starting in Saanich and winding its way around Victoria to the south-west coast, is the famous ‘Galloping Goose Trail’. Named after a rather strange looking railway carriage of earlier times, this former railway line right of way extends for fifty-five kilometers along wheelchair accessible terrain. Besides passing through a great variety of scenery it also has access to fishing, beaches, and areas for pot holing, kayaking and other water activities.

To start us out on our fitness trails, take the Galloping Goose and try the fifty five kilometer walk: or maybe cycling would be easier for you to start out!

Well, while we are all warmed up, why not drive up to Strathcona Provincial Park, in the centre of the island, and do a bit of wilderness hiking.

This is not only the oldest Provincial park on the island but the largest, and has the highest mountain peaks of the Vancouver Island Range; with several towering at over 2,000 meters in height.

This list includes The Golden Hinde, which at nearly 2,200 meters is the tallest in the park and Elkhorn Mountain, just tens of meters shorter.

One of the tallest waterfalls in Canada can also be found in this Park. Della Falls is 440 meters up which provides some astonishing and majestic views to those brave enough to manage the steep hike..

Of course all of this makes an ideal getaway for outdoor enthusiasts and those who feel at home in nature and its surroundings. However, there are bears, cougars and other potentially dangerous animals.

Within Strathcona Provincial Park are dozens of different trails, ranging from easy to advanced. Some trails can be easily done in a less strenuous hike while others are several days long; all are wilderness trails with few amenities.

Now I have you aching for more, so to speak, we can take a look at the Vancouver Island special, the West Coast Trail. What the big boys call “The real Canadian experience”.

This is one tough hike! Besides being 75 kilometers in length it can take anywhere from five to ten days to travel. You will need to bring all your own supplies including food and water, and because of the location on the pacific coast side of the island it is only open to use between May and September.

You have to get a permit, you will get lots of rain and mud, you will have to deal with tide changes, long steep climbs, tree ladders, steep cliffs, natural bridges and manually operated cable cars over deep chasms: and don’t forget the wolves and bears!

Vancouver Island is full of adventures for you to discover, so if you think you can handle a real hiking experience, head to the Pacific North-west and give these three suggestions a try. But come prepared, the British Army training group didn’t find it very easy, and neither will you.

Think your up to it?
